Punjab Medical College Merit Lists 2008-2025 — Closing Merit & Cutoff Trends

Understanding historical merit trends is essential for every MDCAT aspirant. Knowing the closing merit of Punjab medical colleges over the past 18 years helps you set realistic targets, choose the right colleges to apply to, and understand how competitive admissions have become. This page compiles closing merit data for all major Punjab government medical colleges from 2008 to 2025 — covering both the UHS MCAT era (2008-2019) and the PMC MDCAT era (2020-2025).

Important Note: All merit figures shown are approximate closing merits (aggregate percentages) from the final merit list of each year. Actual figures may vary slightly based on open merit vs. reserved seats. Data has been compiled from UHS and PMC official merit lists and publicly available records. Use this data for guidance only — always refer to the official UHS/PMC merit lists for exact figures.

How the System Changed Over the Years

Punjab medical college admissions have undergone significant changes since 2008. Understanding these changes is important when comparing merit data across years:

  • 2008-2019 (UHS MCAT Era): The University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore conducted the MCAT for Punjab. The aggregate formula was: MCAT 50% + FSc 40% + Matric 10%. The MCAT covered Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with 220 MCQs. English and Logical Reasoning were not part of the exam.
  • 2020 (Transition Year): The Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) took over and introduced the national MDCAT. The format changed to 200 MCQs covering Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, and Logical Reasoning. The aggregate formula for Punjab remained: MDCAT 50% + FSc 40% + Matric 10%.
  • 2021-2025 (PMC MDCAT Era): The MDCAT was standardized to 180 MCQs in 3 hours. Biology carries the highest weightage at 45% (81 MCQs), followed by Chemistry 25% (45 MCQs), Physics 20% (36 MCQs), English 5% (9 MCQs), and Logical Reasoning 5% (9 MCQs). The Punjab aggregate formula remains unchanged.

Because the test format, difficulty level, and number of applicants change each year, direct year-to-year comparisons should be made with caution. However, the overall trend of increasing competition is clearly visible across all eras.

Key Observations & Trends

1. Rising Competition Every Year

The data clearly shows that closing merits have increased steadily over 18 years. KEMU's closing merit rose from approximately 86.5% in 2008 to 92.7% in 2025 — an increase of over 6 percentage points. This trend is driven by the growing number of FSc pre-medical students each year, better coaching availability, and increased awareness of preparation resources. The number of MDCAT applicants has grown from approximately 80,000 in 2008 to over 250,000 in 2025, while the number of government medical college seats has remained relatively stable.

2. The 2020 Dip

When PMC took over from UHS in 2020, there was a slight dip in closing merits across most colleges. This is because the first PMC MDCAT was a new format that students were less prepared for, and the exam was perceived as more difficult than the UHS MCAT. By 2021, merits bounced back and continued their upward trend as students adapted to the new format.

3. Consistent Ranking Order

The ranking order of Punjab medical colleges has remained remarkably consistent over 18 years. KEMU has been the most competitive every single year, followed by AIMC, SIMS, FJMU, RMU, and NMU in that order. This stability means you can use historical data to reliably predict which colleges are within your reach based on your expected aggregate.

4. The Gap Between Lahore and Other Cities

There is a consistent 3-5 percentage point gap between the top Lahore colleges (KEMU, AIMC, SIMS) and colleges in other cities (QAMC, SMC, FMC). This gap has remained stable over the years. Students who score slightly below the Lahore cutoffs often have excellent options in cities like Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, and Bahawalpur.

5. BDS vs MBBS Cutoffs

BDS (dental) cutoffs at each college are typically 2-4 percentage points lower than MBBS cutoffs. For example, if KEMU MBBS closes at 92.7%, the BDS cutoff might be around 89-90%. This means students who narrowly miss the MBBS cutoff at a top college may still qualify for BDS at the same institution.

What This Data Means for Your Preparation

Understanding historical merits helps you plan strategically. Here is how to use this data:

  1. Set a realistic target aggregate. If you want KEMU, aim for 94%+ to be safe based on recent trends. For mid-tier Punjab colleges, 91-93% is now required. The lowest closing merit for any Punjab government college in 2024-25 was above 94%.
  2. Work backwards from your target. If you need a 94% aggregate and already have 96% in FSc and 93% in Matric, your required MDCAT score is: (94 - 96*0.4 - 93*0.1) / 0.5 = (94 - 38.4 - 9.3) / 0.5 = 92.6%. That is about 167/180 in MDCAT.
  3. Understand the margin of error. Merits can fluctuate significantly between years (e.g. KEMU went from 91.50% in 2021-22 to 96.06% in 2024-25). Always aim 2-3% above the recent average to be safe.
  4. Have backup options ready. List at least 3-4 colleges at different merit levels. All Punjab government colleges now close above 90%, so private colleges serve as the real backup.
  5. MDCAT carries the most weight. Since MDCAT is 50% of your aggregate, every 1% improvement in your MDCAT score adds 0.5% to your aggregate. Improving your MDCAT from 85% to 90% adds 2.5% to your aggregate — that is often the difference between your backup and your dream college.

Punjab Aggregate Formula Recap

The Punjab medical college aggregate formula has remained the same since 2008:

Aggregate = (MDCAT % x 0.50) + (FSc % x 0.40) + (Matric % x 0.10)

For example, with MDCAT 165/180 (91.67%), FSc 1060/1100 (96.36%), and Matric 1030/1100 (93.64%):

Aggregate = (91.67 x 0.50) + (96.36 x 0.40) + (93.64 x 0.10) = 45.84 + 38.54 + 9.36 = 93.74%

This aggregate would comfortably qualify for KEMU in most recent years. Use our Merit Calculator to calculate your own aggregate instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do merit cutoffs always go up?

Generally yes, because the number of applicants increases each year while medical college seats remain relatively fixed. However, there can be slight dips in years when the exam is unusually difficult (like the 2020 transition year). Over any 5-year period, the trend has been consistently upward.

Are these cutoffs for open merit or all categories?

The figures in this article represent open merit (general category) closing merits. Reserved seats for disabled students, minorities, and other categories typically have lower cutoffs. Self-finance seats also have lower cutoffs than open merit seats.

How accurate are these numbers?

These are approximate figures compiled from publicly available UHS and PMC merit lists. The actual closing merit of the final merit list each year may differ by 0.1-0.5% from the figures shown here. Always refer to the official UHS or PMC website for exact merit list data.

Which college should I target?

Target a college where the closing merit is 1-2% below your expected aggregate. If your projected aggregate is 90%, colleges like SIMS (~90.2%), FJMU (~89.4%), and RMU (~88.8%) would be realistic targets. KEMU and AIMC would be stretch goals. Always list multiple colleges in your preference order.
